Enter our July giveaway for a chance to win sustainable prizes from Landsvirkjun!
Thanks to Iceland’s remarkable geography and geology that provide both hydro and geothermal resources, the country has an abundance of clean, renewable energy. In the 20th century, Icelanders began harnessing these natural resources, realizing their potential in helping transform the society from coal-reliant to one generating nearly all of its energy from renewable means.
Incredibly, 99% of electricity in Iceland is produced from renewable energy sources. One of the largest producers of renewable energy in Europe, Landsvirkjun, the National Power Company of Iceland, generates three quarters of Iceland’s electricity from hydroelectric power, geothermal energy and wind. The first substantial hydro power station was built at Búrfell, which led to the development of five hydro power plants and reservoirs built in the central and south highlands of Iceland. Since then, Landsvirkjun has expanded vastly.
Landsvirkjun now operates 18 power stations all over Iceland. In its operating power stations, the company emphasises a holistic vision, where prudence, reliability and harmony of the operations with the environment and society are the guiding principles. Landsvirkjun’s goal is to consistently endeavour to maximize the potential yield and value of the natural resources that Iceland has been entrusted with in a sustainable, responsible and efficient manner.
At visitor centers located at Landsvirkjun’s power stations in the countryside, you can learn about the process of converting either hydro or geothermal energy into electricity and how geothermal water is used for space heating. The exhibitions are often interactive and show how modern technology is used in the energy sector. The visitor centers offer educational, fun and interesting activities for the whole family!

Magma well at Krafla: Temperature World Record
Landsvirkjun, the National Power Company of Iceland is the founder of the Icelandic Deep Drilling Project. The project, which marks a milestone in energy research, involves drilling deeper boreholes than have been attempted before. These boreholes will be 4-5 km in depth and it is estimated that they could give between 5-10 times more energy than standard boreholes. The first borehole (IDDP-1) was drilled in the Krafla area in 2008-2009. The drilling of the well came to an abrupt end at 2.1 km depth where the drill-bit intersected magma. Flow test of the well in 2010-2012 gave of steam at 430-450°C making it by far the hottest geothermal well in the world It is estimated that the potential energy production of the borehole could be between 25-35 MWe. Despite the earlier setbacks, the project has provided valuable knowledge and experience for future endeavours Find out more at www.landsvirkjun.comENTER HERE
