A total of more than 5.1 million passengers travelled through Avinor’s airports in June. The increase in passenger numbers was 0.5 per cent compared to June 2017.
“June is a month with high numbers of both business and leisure travellers, and passenger figures show how important Norwegian airports are for Norwegian business, travel and tourism,” says Traffic Director Jasper Spruit in Avinor.
The number of domestic passengers dropped by 1.2 per cent, while the number of international passengers increased by 2.4 per cent. Growth was most pronounced in charter traffic, with an increase of 4.5 per cent, while the number of passengers on international scheduled flights increased by 2.2 per cent.
The number of offshore passengers increased by a huge 11.2 per cent, indicating increased activity in the oil and gas industry.
However, the number of commercial flight movements dropped by 1.7 per cent in June. Domestic traffic decreased by 5 per cent while international traffic grew by 4 per cent.
Out of Avinor’s ten largest airports, only Oslo Airport (+2 per cent), Tromsø Airport (+1.3 per cent), Ålesund Airport (+ 2.1 per cent) and Kristiansand Airport (+ 1.8 per cent) saw growth in passenger figures in June.
Significant charter growth
With regard to the regional airports it was Svalbard that saw the greatest growth, with an increase of 3,400 passengers in June (+17.5 per cent).
Among the charter destinations, growth was particularly strong to Greece and Turkey in June. Greece had an increase of 8,300 charter passengers (+7 per cent), while Turkey grew by 5,800 passengers (+90 per cent). Among the scheduled flight destinations growth was greatest to Poland and France, with 19,800 (+20 per cent) and 18,500 (+22 per cent) respectively.
Turkey also saw strong passenger growth on scheduled flights, with an increase of 8,300 (+27 per cent)
